Fredrich Froebel and the Kindergarten Method - Online

About the Program

Podar Institute of Education offers an inspirational early childhood teacher course that narrates the life and work of pioneer Friedrich Froebel, the founder of the first kindergarten and the inventor of play-based learning.

By applying Froebel's principles and practices on modern-day early childhood education courses, this course aims to provide educators with a valuable framework for understanding and implementing effective teaching methods for young children.

Froebel's fresh approach towards early childhood education emphasised the importance of childhood as a foundational stage of life, rather than merely preparing children for adulthood. He believed that education should be holistic, involving physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual development of children.

Froebel also emphasised the significance of play as a more natural and essential way for children to learn.

What will this course teach?

  • This teacher training course encourages learners to improvise their lessons based on the unique needs and readiness of children. While some children benefit with more flexibility and options, others may need guidance and supervision to ensure proper learning. The course emphasises on monitoring kids’ growth and offers them learning opportunities.
  • Early childhood educators are encouraged to create a supportive environment that nurtures emotional, social, and physical development in young children. Additionally, they are trained to instil confidence and self-worth in children.
  • The course students are equipped to encourage young children to stay self-motivated and support their natural emotional flow rather than suppressing it. By doing this, these children grow up to become self-motivated, independent individuals.
  • Course practitioners will be expected to develop a nurturing and motivating attitude towards young children, wherein they nudge the children to become self-dependent through discipline and concentration. These qualities will help children stay focussed and learn concepts better.

What makes our course unique?

  • This course lets learners take a child-centred approach where children are allowed to explore and learn at their own pace, which is in contrast to traditional teaching methods of teacher-directed education.
  • The course encourages the use of Froebel’s educational tools called ‘gifts’ and ‘occupations’ specifically designed for structured play activities. These tools enable the course practitioners to bring out creativity in young children while helping develop their problem-solving and fine-motor skills.
  • This course equips the practitioners to approach child development with a holistic lens, including physical, emotional, intellectual, and social parameters. The method aimed at creating a nurturing environment that fostered children’s growth in all areas.
  • The course guides practitioners to integrate nature-based learning apart from classroom education. This involves encouraging children to play outside in a park or garden, where they can explore and learn about their natural surroundings.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for This Course?

  • Early educators aiming to advance their teaching career
  • Fresh graduates interested in pursuing a career in teaching
  • Experienced teachers who want to experiment with teaching approaches for the betterment of children
  • Principals, school coordinators, and education consultants who want to introduce new teaching methods in their school curriculum for improved learning.

MODULE SYNOPSIS
Paper 1 - Froebel's Kindergarten - his educational approach, philosophy and theory

Aimed as a child-centred approach to early childhood education, Froebel's kindergarten positioned play the most fundamental learning tool. It stems from Froebel's philosophy of promoting unity, generating interest about nature, and encouraging self-activity among young children.

Paper 2 - Froebel mother songs and mother play

Froebel had formed a unique pedagogy with 'mother songs' and mother play, intended to emphasise on maternal figures playing a key role in fostering various aspects of child development, including emotional growth, social interactions, and understanding the world. These aspects align with modern-day education's belief of encouraging individuality in young children by letting their personality develop more naturally.

Paper 3 - Froebel Gifts and Occupations

Froebel developed a series of educational objects that he called 'gifts' designed to encourage children to explore and create. He also came up with several activities, calling them 'occupations', such as modelling clay, drawing, paper folding, and more, promoting practical skills to bring out latent creativity and intellectual abilities in children.

Paper 4 - Froebel and Parent Education

Froebel believed that not just teachers but parents too, play a significant role in children's education. Teachers can work as a team with parents as they share a common goal of bringing out the best in their children. By providing proper guidance and support, teachers and parents can cultivate a strong culture at school and home during those early days, ensuring good upbringing for young children.

Paper 5 - Froebel and Teacher training

Froebel's philosophy largely centred around the overall development in children through play support and intervention by grown-ups. He believed that teachers need to be well educated and trained with relevant practical skills to support holistic child development. As a result, Froebel's ideas led to reforms in early childhood education courses and teacher training courses.

Paper 6 - Children's Garden - Educational Setting

Froebel's philosophy also stresses on the fact that young children should experience all of nature, including plants, animals, birds, and the environment. One of the best ways to get them to connect with nature is by letting them play outside in a garden or park. These experiences provide more opportunities of play and exploration to young children.

Paper 7 - Froebel Gifts and modern-day coding

Course students are trained to utilise Froebel Gifts for encouraging children to develop pre-coding skills, starting at a young age. These screen-free coding tools bring out creativity in children and help them develop hands-on experiences, which makes learning more meaningful and fun.
